Marty was a one-of-a-kind person with a one-of-a-kind story. Marty and his family fled Latvia during WWII and traveled to the United States, passing through Ellis Island and eventually ending up in Great Falls MT. It is here where Marty graduated from Great Falls High School. During his high school years, he was a football player and earned himself a football scholarship at Montana State University. An injury cut his football career short, and he transferred to the University of Montana where he became a member of the SAE Fraternity and a lifelong Griz fan. At the University of Montana, he earned a degree in History and Literature.
Marty lived the remainder of his life in Missoula raising four children, working in the banking industry and in real estate. Of course, Marty cannot be forgotten for his ownership of and work at The Sugar Shack, a renowned doughnut shop on Higgins.
The Marty Mikelsons Zeal Scholarship is awarded annually by the members and advisors of Montana Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon to an active member who they feel exhibits a positive impact on the Chapter, other members, the University of Montana and the Missoula community as a whole.
